What Weirdo Writes This Thing?
I have a lot of passion for examining the history and the economic development of cities (no surprise then that I went to school for urban planning).
Mixing that into my passion for DnD just made sense.
My familiarity from Dungeons and Dragons really started with the video games. I grew up playing Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights and much more recently spent four years doing part-time contract QA work for Beamdog. In particular, I worked on the enhanced edition games including Siege of Dragonspear.
Between that and my extensive modding for the Baldur’s Gate franchise (where I go by the name yellow hat elminster), my NPC steam guides, and the absurd amount of time I’ve spent helping others on the Beamdog forums I’ve grown to learn quite a bit about the game and Dungeons and Dragons in general. That and of course DMing in 5th edition for the last few years.
Why a Blog?
I kept writing these things on Reddit and this just seemed like a way to get all my thoughts down in a single place. Also I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t inspired by the amazing The Monsters Know What They Are Doing blog.
Also some douches at newzpro.com decided to yank my Waterdeep post from Reddit. So I guess I wanted somewhere people could access them outside of Reddit that I actually had control over.
What Can I Expect to Get Out of This?
Ultimately, the blog is about getting the best use you can out of each of the cities it profiles. Other than maybe population figures I’m trying to avoid regurgitating too much of what is written in the official sources (though this is not always easy).
I’m also not really planning on doing requests or permitting comments. For me this is kind of a passion project and having to handle either of these things just isn’t something I’m interested in.
